Full-time Traditional Coordinator/Educator for Shawanaga First Nations
At Shawanaga First Nation Healing Centre, Nobel ON (North of Parry Sound)

 

Purpose & Reports

The position will be directly responsible to the Executive Director for the coordination of the traditional healing component of the Healing Centre service delivery to the members of SFN and area FNs.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  1. To plan, coordinate, supervise and deliver a comprehensive traditional healing programs which will include traditional healers, traditional counselling, guidance, referrals, teachings, conduct traditional healing ceremonies and community healing activities
  2. To conduct individual and group counselling, traditional teachings, education and make referrals when necessary to the Traditional Health Care provider(s)
  3. To plan and maintain a regular schedule of traditional healing providers to provide on-site services
  4. Provide advice to the Executive Director on delivery of appropriate traditional services
  5. Maintain client records, statistics and documentation as required for funding as well as management of services for clients, referrals  and community needs assessment
  6. Liaise with other First Nation communities and aboriginal organizations for the provision of services to secondary target populations of the Healing Centre
  7. To work as a member of a team for other duties as may be required as it pertains to the delivery of the Health Care component of the Healing Centre or as assigned by the Executive Director

Qualifications

  1. Must be of aboriginal decent- preferably Ojibway
  2. Must possess at least 5 years experience in coordinating and developing cultural education and training materials, as well as counselling and teaching, able to speak/understand & teach the language of Ojibway, traditions/history, ceremonies, culture/teachings, customs and beliefs.
  3. Able to meet the goals and objectives of the Healing Centre and able to work collaboratively with western health care providers to optimize healthy results
  4. Must provide good references from teachers/elders who have educated them
  5. Knowledgeable and experienced with gathering and preparation of traditional medicines and application
  6. Have experience working with traditional and non-traditional health care providers.
  7. Must possess excellent communication and computer skills and be a team player
  8. Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle and current CPIC for Vulnerable Sector

Hours of Work

37.5 hr/wk, primarily Mon-Friday with some evening and weekend work as needed to meet the needs of the program for optimal outcomes i.e. youth programming off hours, to be determined
